What the brewers say

“Laws whiskey barrel–aged barleywine.”

What our panel thought

“Moderate caramel, toast, and pipe tobacco. Light buttery vanilla oak. Soft notes of dried apricot and fig. Rich and sweet malt with flavors of caramel, toast, and pipe tobacco. Significant alcohol, hot on the swallow. Finishes sweet and a touch cloying. Alcohol lingers a while.”

What our editors thought

“Light nuttiness and caramel on the nose. In the sip, wood meets nuts with a light ethanol edge. More breezy and pointed than deep.”

Broken Strings Brewery Have A Cigar

“The nose is packed with figs, cherry, dates soaked in vanilla-tinged bourbon. The taste evokes a caramel- and spirits-filled chocolate. A big, chewy drinking experience with some rough edges.”

Verboten Brewing Grow Old With You: Grand Reserve

“Aromatic notes of cherries, rye (pepper), toffee are paired with a bourbon-barrel oak note. Sweetness and low-medium carbonation balance the chocolate, cherry, toffee flavors. Soft alcoholic notes from the oaky bourbon barrel.”

Our Mutual Friend Brewing Fixed Blade

“Caramel, toasty chocolate, toffee notes greet the nose, with a hint of whiskey. Flavors of toffee, caramel, molasses, dark dried fruit. Some alcohol bite with a good amount of bitterness tempers the sweetness. Finish is relatively clean.”
