Perch Gastropub Simple Village

What the brewers say

“House lager for Perch Gastropub. Clean, balanced, crisp.”

What our panel thought

“A bold graininess up front; robust malt flavor adds depth and character to a clean, clear lager. Spicy, earthy hops cut through the malt. Slightly astringent huskiness. Some phenolic notes waft around in the background. Finishes delicately dry and crisp.”

What our editors thought

“Light and sweet floral aroma, simple and understated. Malt in the sip drops with a toasty edge, leaving a toothy, herbal finish.”

Green’s Enterprise Dry-Hopped Lager

**Aroma:** “Surprising peach and resin hops. Sorghum grainy aroma. Spicy hops notes up front. Sweet malt, some fruity characters. Some grape-like notes. Very fruity. Strong apple aroma with notes of white wine. Light honey-like sweetness. No noticeable alcohol presence.” **Flavor:** “Hops-forward, stone-fruit. A bit of candy-like sweetness from the base grain, with the hops character coming through mostly as earthy, spicy hops. Finishes a bit astringent, with a slight tartness. The grain-like sweetness hits in the front but dries out quickly with some slight grassy and tangy character in the finish. Grape-wine characteristics. Finishes very dry. Notes of ginger and lemongrass.” **Overall:** “The bold hops profile helps this stand out. This beer provides some nice complexity with the tangy sharp carbonation giving a taste of a highly carbonated wine. Starts with a floral, fruity aroma. The taste profile comes across very soda like, particularly with the high level of carbonation. Very dry finish.”

New Belgium Brewing La Folie

**Aroma:** “Clean apple cider vinegar twang, hint of raspberry seeds. Strong fruit notes—cranberry? Slight cracked pepper phenolic note. Mid-level sour intensity with a light fruity sour aroma. Finishes with a touch of grainy sweet malt aroma.” **Flavor:** “High fruit up front similar to a fruit leather. Strong dark fruit sourness and dark malt character that doesn’t give much sweetness but complex bread and toasty bits in the background. Tart cranberry-like astringency. Very earthy and funky Brett character, finishing with a slightly sour bite. Finish is dry and crisp with a lingering tartness.” **Overall:** “The funky barnyard flavors and acidity blend very well together. The malt is just enough to support those complex flavors, resulting in a fairly light-bodied beer. Fruity characters with a moderate amount of sour as it warms. Balanced with a good level of carbonation to support it. Sour and astringent.”

Julian Cider Company Harvest Apple

**Aroma:** “Light apple aroma with some earthy, even mealy notes around the edges. Light esters of pears and rose petals. Delicate nose with unripe apples. Clean, crisp apple character.” **Flavor:** “Dry to off-dry. Notes of light lager beer. Apple flavor is light and leans toward green apples. Some tannins in the aftertaste. Soft finish. Very clean mix of apples and pears. Subtle acidity. Crisp and slightly tart.” **Overall:** “Light, clean, semidry, and refreshing. Thirst-quenching even. The apple complexity is low and somewhat watery. Very pale but crystal clear. Beautiful in the glass. This is a nuanced drink that doesn’t throw fruit in your face. Reminds me of a crisp white wine.”
