Perennial Artisan Ales Frances

What the brewers say

Fermented entirely with yeast captured in south city St. Louis in the early spring of 2015, and aged in American oak for 16 months.

What our panel thought

Earthy, pungent funk with wisps of barnyard, dried fruit, bright lemon, light smoke, and leather. Puckering acidity out front, sharp, but accentuating fruit notes—a mélange of pear, plum, citrus, cherry. Earthy funk hangs back. For the sourheads.

What our editors thought

Lime, dirt, pavement, mango, ginger, raisin, mushroom, must—the nose resembles Pickapeppa sauce, in the best way. The sip cranks up lactic lemon-lime; acidic burst quickly settles. Orange-tangerine comes forward with a caramel touch. Deliciously complex.

Fair Isle Brewing Season 1 Batch E

Spicy, herbal aroma with sweeter notes of lemon wedges crushed for lemonade. Tart, lemony flavor with wheaty and spicy notes, riding on a lively mouthfeel to a dry, bitter, slightly harsh finish. Pleasant acidity but a bit one-note. Nicely quenching.

Transient Artisan Ales Methodic Batch #2

Subtle, compelling aroma: light herbal, peach, lemon, leather, barnyard. In the flavor, balanced but vinegar-like acidity with fruit-forward notes: pear, apricot, mango, Sour Patch Kids. Ethyl acetate (solventy)—not enough to be off-putting, but competes with subtle, more pleasant flavors. Finishes dry. Sour candy vibe, with funk for complexity.

Perennial Artisan Ales Pharmacy

Shy nose, hint of caramel latte, quiet suggestions of chocolate, dried fruit. Rich, malty flavor with more caramel, toffee, hints of raisin and nut, a delicate wisp of licorice and molasses. Somewhat full, silky mouthfeel, accentuating sweetness. Lacking depth of malt and body, but drinkable.
