Perrin Brewing Company Anniversary Amber Ale

What the brewers say

This deep, complex, malt-forward amber ale has notes of gooseberries, black currant, and a pleasant hop aroma.

What our panel thought

Pleasant nose, as light caramel and biscuit blend with light citrus-dank hops and soft perfume esters. Piney hops step forward in flavor, balanced by backdrop of biscuit, caramel, and bread-crust malt. Drier finish, smooth aftertaste. Hits the marks but lacks that "wow" factor.

What our editors thought

Whisper-quiet nose with faint bread crust and vague fruity esters. The sip stays low-key, eschewing character for broad drinkability. The result is nothing—a beer that isn't trying to be anything and succeeds at its goal.

Full Sail Brewing Co Amber Ale

Aroma of caramel and biscuit with stone-fruit esters; hop bouquet of sweet citrus, pine, and tropical fruit; savory note. Caramel and biscuit sweetness hit early, balanced by a citrus-resin hop punch, followed by lightly bitter, mouth-coating finish. One-dimensional malt. Counter-punching sweet and bitter aspects work well.

West Sixth Brewing Co Amber Ale

“Slightly malty in the nose, with floral and pine notes. Spicy hop flavors lead into subdued malt flavors. Caramel component moves pleasantly into the background, letting stone-fruit and pine elements move forward. Light on the tongue, soft into the finish.”

Suncrush Beer Tangerine Suncrush

Aroma: “Slightly over-ripe tangerine but where’s the tea?” Flavor: “Tangerine dominates up front, but it’s not overpowering, and well- balanced with the malt and bitterness. The tea character emerges at the end and lingers, giving a pleasant aftertaste of afternoon tea with biscuits and jam. Relatively thin in body, so it drinks a bit like a lightly sweetened ice tea. Finishes dry mostly from the citric acid.” Overall: “It’s all about the tangerine. It is a curious and creative beer that seemingly shouldn’t work, but is quite refreshing and fun. Don’t go looking for any particular beer character—it’s definitely fruit-forward and meant for crushing on warm summer days, not savoring.”
