pFriem Family Brewers Cold Brew Coffee Barrel Aged Stout

What the brewers say

"It’s officially cold brew season, and our Bourbon Stout is ready for its afternoon pick-me-up. The stout base, boasting bakers chocolate and dark raisin notes, is bursting into Summer when layered with Coava Coffee’s Sulawesi Gowa Topidi, swirling qualities of mango, juniper, and brown sugar into this lively brew."

What our panel thought

“Dark-roast cold-brew with cream in the aroma, carrying through into the flavor. Slightly astringent; roast-coffee note lingers into the finish with unsweetened chocolate. Pleasant warmth accompanies each sip.”

What our editors thought

“Slight ashy coffee-roast in the nose. Flavor wrestles with itself—tight roast, bright acidity, thin body, peanutty roundness. High carbonation diminishes its savory nature. Too regimented in this category of debauchery.”

The Lost Abbey Church on the Hill 2021 vintage

“Coffee with a pepper-flesh character that fades into the oak. The flavor is bitter espresso fortified with a half shot of bourbon. Finishes off dry with lingering bitterness.”

Tallgrass Brewing Co. One-Eyed Jacques

__Aroma:__ “Really nice prune and raisin vinous character up front very evident of Belgian yeast—a healthy blend of fruity esters and spicy phenols: pear, overripe apple, and light banana with a pleasant floral, spice note. Great dark burnt caramel and toffee, with a roast character akin to earthy moss.” __Flavor:__ “Bright yeasty prune esters and a white pepper phenolic dominate but still showcase the roast. Banana and clove, with star anise, black licorice, and a touch of floral spice. Lime and lemon citrus notes. The coffee and dark caramel character comes through as it warms.” __Overall:__ “A great job balancing and harmonizing the different flavor profiles. The dark caramel is fantastic with this ever-so-slight dark roast/special B character. Banana bread with raisins becomes more apparent as it warms. The monks would be proud!”

“Pleasant, rich fruity nose with candy undertones. Grainy malt adds a foundation for a clean lactic sour character with hints of peach, white pepper, guava, mango, fresh leather. High carbonation adds bite and definition to the finish. Bright and crisp, but with enough complexity to stay interesting.”
