PFriem Family Brewers Oud Bruin Kriek

What the brewers say

Barrel-aged for three years, with rich notes of raspberry, fig, and leather.

What our panel thought

Delicate raspberry-citrus aroma, with barrel funk and crushed lemons in an old wooden pail. Flavor brings dark fruit, tart cherry, red currant, tomato—nicely balancing malty sweetness and acidity. Balsamic edge tickles the tonsils. Delicate, smooth finish.

What our editors thought

Earthy, vinous nose, with nutty notes—more like red wine than beer. The sip lowers a caramel boom, as rich cherry notes reverberate with big malt, while vanilla and nutty barrel polish it. Intense yet refined.

Funkwerks Oud Bruin

Aroma: “Tart apple sourness with underlying dark malt, dried fruit (cherry and black currant) notes, dark unsweetened chocolate, and a pleasant woodsy character. Perfect for a Flanders reddish/brownish old ale.” Flavor: “The malt complexity has dried cherries, prunes, black currants, chocolate, and tobacco but comes across relatively dry on the finish. This is balanced by a pleasant underlying sourness that adds to the fruity character. The woodsy character adds nice astringency on the finish and adds to the perception of dryness.” Overall: “A fantastic example of a complex, dark, sour beer with wild- fermentation character. Great balance throughout. Subtle complexity from the initial sniff through the lingering swallow that gets better as it warms. Expertly crafted Oud Bruin–style beer.”

3 Fonteinen Oude Kriek

**Aroma:** “Nice tart and sweet cherry character. Some earthy spicy notes that add complexity. Moderate cherry notes. Slight tart note as it warms up. Strong sour cherry aroma.” **Flavor:** “The balance of the sweetness to the tartness in this beer is really nice. It is not too bold but the nice sharp lactic notes bring boldness to this beer. The carbonation is really nice and helps lift the beer as well. The sweet cherries help to finish the beer and keep it juicy and sweet. Very nice sour cherry character. Not too much barnyard, but still sour complexity.” **Overall:** “Very enjoyable and a nice balance of the tartness to the sweetness. The showcase of both the cherry and the lactic tartness was very nice. As it warms and the carbonation starts to dissipate, more of the cherry note comes out. Light goat and horse blanket.”

pFriem Family Brewers New Avenues Blend #1

Fruit character pops out of the glass. Grapes just balance the strong berry notes. Light funk, medium acidity. The marionberry and Riesling play off each other, and the raspberry doesn’t overpower. Approachable and drinkable.
