What the brewers say

“Pirate Noir is our Jamaican rum barrel–aged imperial oatmeal stout. This beer adds intense notes of vanilla, coconut, and rum to our Prairie Noir.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “A blend between vanilla, maple syrup, molasses, and dark cherry. Some dark chocolate notes as it warms. Rum sweetness. A little coconut. Brown sugar and oak.”

Flavor: “A blend of dark cherry and rich sweet dark malt. Some nice chocolate and toffee notes. The rum sugar sweetness adds to this beer. Vanilla and coconut also add to the sweet character. The warmth is present through the finish. Rich brown sugar and vanilla overwhelm the base beer. Some roast and chocolate under the barrel character.”

Overall: “A unique beer whose sweetness is a little overpowering. This is a big beer, but the rum barrel works nicely with it. It’s tasty, but I have no idea what the base beer tastes like. Less barrel character would improve the beer.”
