What the brewers say

“This Czech-style dark lager is a showcase of some of our favorite European malts.”

What our panel thought

“Chocolate fills the nose, suggesting roasty sulfur, dark fruit, and coffee. Flavor carries notes of semisweet chocolate, plum, roast coffee, butterscotch, toffee, and cherries. Low hop bitterness, rather sweet. Lower carbonation. Mineral-water finish ends with herbal hop bitterness.”

What our editors thought

“Subtle toasted wood in the aroma with just a bit of husky grain. Sleek and succinct in the sip, downplaying the malt with a subtle, clean, herbal-woody hop note.”

Pivotal Brewing Company Bryter Pilsner Lorien

“Perfume and pine aromatics blend with hints of light malt and a healthy dose of sulfur that slowly fades. Cracker-like malt sweetness creates a nice structure upon which the perfume, soapy, and lightly pine-forward bitterness can shine. Well balanced, with enough bitterness to linger into the clean, snappy finish.”

King's Road Brewing Company Tmavé Pivo

A nice toasted bread crust aroma greets the nose, along with some low earthy notes. Rich, prominent roast character. Relatively complex, bread crust and notes of coffee. Roast masks some sweetness, caramel and dark fruit. Lightly astringent finish. Quite bitter in balance, and grassy with grapefruit zest notes.

12 West Brewing Company Midnight Run

“Bold dark-roast coffee notes dominate the aroma with dark-chocolate hints in the background. Initial sip lets some roast and chocolate-like malt sweetness come through, but that sweetness is quickly tempered by a somewhat heavy-handed coffee-forward bitterness that lingers.”
