Prison City Brewing 4 Piece with Strata

What the brewers say

Our single-hop pale-ale series features Strata from Oregon. Nice dank flavor and aroma. Great fruity and citrusy undertones as well.

What our panel thought

Thick, velvety blanket of foam. In the aroma, pink Starburst with a vegetal note. Grassy flavor with lemon custard and honey malt; nicely balanced sweetness with light background bitterness. Slick, tongue-coating mouthfeel. A bit unwieldy, raw, but with high points.

What our editors thought

On the nose, a defined and edgy lemon-tropical blend has a crisp linen through line. Curious and unexpected. On the sip, juicy lemon and tangerine with light peach and apricot, just enough bitterness to keep that edge, and a pleasing taut finish.

Black Project STARGATE²

Peaches and licorice up front. A distracting bubblegum-like flavor leads to a feeling of biting into a ripe peach skin. Intense tartness overpowers the positive peach flavors, and a bit of Brett bite adds to the sharp corners. If you like very sour beers with intense peach flavor, you will love this beer.

5:00 O'Clock Afternoon Ale Renegade Brewing

Aroma: “Largely neutral. Sweet corn-like malt mingles with slight floral and sweet soapy hops aromas. All are very subtle and restrained.” Flavor: “Simultaneously sweet and bitter all the way through, notes of flowers and candied apples, herbal hops, and a mineral characteristic. Clean fermentation highlights dry malt and crisp hops bitterness. Finishes very dry.” Overall: “Light and neutral. With so much going on, it comes across as muddled rather than complex. Yet, the crisp hops bitterness has no trace of harsh edges.”

Prison City Brewing Seward's Folly

Fresh, vibrant hop aroma: lemon, orange, grapefruit, and light pine with underlying cracker/bread malt. Flavor is more balanced, moderate, with light toast and cracker malt balancing citrus, pine, and lemongrass hops. Drab mouthfeel, somewhat lifeless. Dry finish. Refreshing.
