Prost Brewing Company Marzen

What the brewers say

“German-style Oktoberfest lager.”

What our panel thought

“Toasty and bready, the aroma is elegant and clean. Pleasant, brightly sweet malt note sings out front, like an amped-up helles, sweet pastry, or the purest honey. Reddish-gold color—lovely—with ample foam. Each sip has the same disciplined simplicity of bruschetta, herbal hop flavor, and crisp clean finish.”

What our editors thought

“Light nutty, bready notes on the nose hit it right down the middle of the style. The sip keeps the conversation flowing, with punchy malt notes that waver between sweet and dry, threading a difficult needle. A burst of earthy hops in the finish.”

Prost Brewing Company Pilsner

“Light cracker and bread malt notes blend well with bright, clean floral hop notes in the aroma. The sip is super-crisp and refreshing, with a nice balance of cracker-like malt, floral and lightly soapy hops and a touch of minerality.”

Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest Märzen

“Red-tinted gold color, with toasted-grain and moist-loaf notes. A study in toasted caramel. From the aromatic swirl of sweetness in the nose to the malty depths of the flavor, into the slight stickiness in the drying finish, it offers up more details to complement its sweet center. Touches of raisin, mild spice, and ginger.”

Spaten Oktoberfest Marzen

“Toffee-toasty fireworks in the nose and mouth. Pleasant, well-integrated aroma—light caramel, a bit of nutty toasted malt, and some fresh wort, with light herbal hops. Bright sweetness is grounded by a shadow of molasses. It’s not as clean or crisp as my memories of Bavaria, but it does seem well-matched for a cool fall evening.”
