What the brewers say

“Lager yeast makes this big dark beer extremely smooth and chocolaty. It lacks the roast bitterness of a stout but has layers of chocolate, coffee, caramel, perhaps toffee, and a wine-like finish.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Chocolate with a grassy hops character. A bit understated overall, but clean and appealing. Alcohol evident.”

Flavor: “Rich and complex malt—coffee, toffee, figs, dried fruit. Finish has hints of grassy hops, a slight dark-malt tartness, with lingering toffee, chocolate, and a bit of alcoholic heat. Balance is slightly sweet, but not cloying, which accentuates the soft, creamy finish. Some nice chocolate notes in aftertaste.”

Overall: “A fantastic beer—rich and complex, without harsh edges, and a lingering creamy finish that accentuates the dark-malt character throughout.”

Dovetail Brewery Baltic-Style Porter

Aroma ranges from toasted breadcrust to treacle—roasty, with accents of hazelnut, brown sugar, molasses, raisin, plum, and coffee. Balanced, subtle sweetness in the flavor, roast and caramel with notes of chocolate, praline, sherry. Body is lighter than expected, but the subtlety makes you wish everything was turned up just a few notches.

Good Word Brewing & Public House Quantum Immortality

“Beautiful aroma of toasted caramel, light bread, earthy, herbal, grassy hops with a hint of grape. Smooth medium+ hop bitterness up front plays well with the sweet and toasty malt flavors. Moderately light body has a nice round character. Finishes medium dry. Well-balanced, very smooth, and delicious.”

Jack's Abby Barrel-Aged Framinghammer

Aroma: “Hints of booze, chocolate, and toasted coconut. Barrel components stand out—some wood but mostly whiskey.” Flavor: “Prominent smooth, creamy milk chocolate and coffee. Low supporting hops. Spicy woody alcohol flavor. Complex malt richness with toffee and coconut is accentuated by the barrel-aged qualities that add a tannic wood dryness, some toasted coconut, and a pleasant underlying boozy warmth. Finish is rich, but not overly cloying.” Overall: “Great underlying Baltic porter with interesting barrel-aged character. It certainly comes across pretty strong and a bit boozy, but you’re paying for a barrel-aged beer so it should slap you around a bit.”
