Pure Project In Search of Balance

What the brewers say

This unfiltered pilsner is built on German Weyermann Barke Pilsner malt and dry hopped with Nelson Sauvin and Wai-iti hops from New Zealand.

What our panel thought

Grapefruit and lemon-citrus notes play off diesel and dank pine for unique but interesting nose. Compelling flavor profile with hints of cucumber, green onion, and dank pine. Wouldn't have guessed this was a pilsner if I closed my eyes. Balanced bitterness. Clean and crisp lager battles with brash and bold hops.

What our editors thought

Sharply fragrant New Zealand hop aroma evokes tropical fruit with overtones of woody herbs and diesel. The sip is a touch sweet, but the bitterness has a dankness that cuts through it. New school, without sacrificing the pilsner essence.

Moksa Brewing Co Let's Lager

“Floral, spicy, lemony hop character. Orange peel citrus with a sweeter malt profile yields a heavier finish than expected. Lingering hop notes add some welcome complexity. Pleasant and interesting, simplified yet characterful. Bitterness is low but the beer still has an impression of dryness.”

Untitled Art / 2nd Shift New Zealand Pilsner

“Tropical hop aroma; citrus, herbs, green apple, spearmint. Flavor sweeter and mouthfeel heavier than expected, but tropical notes are delightful. Malt backbone helps stand up to these hops. Like lager hop juice.”

Cloudburst Brewing Birthday Czech

“Pilsner malts takes center stage in the aroma, with herbal spicy hops in a supporting role. They trade places in the flavor, where the malt drops back significantly. There’s still enough to offer balance for the hop bitterness, but not enough to soften the edge. Seems connected to water—not as soft as it could be. Not Northern German pils bitterness, but still pronounced.”
