Schramm’s Mead Raspberry

What the brewers say

“A raspberry mead made from Michigan raspberries and orange-blossom honey. As a result of the high level of acidity in the berries, it can age gracefully for several years.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Rich juicy berry notes with light skin, clean smooth alcohol, and a bit of citrus acid in finish but no honey. Intense raspberry aroma is like warm raspberries in the sun, going overripe or a thick rasp- berry syrup on warm pancakes.”

Flavor: “It’s a raspberry bomb—the honey and alcohol both hide until late finish with a final pleasant honey note on top of the berry juice. Fruit dominates the honey with an intense raspberry flavor. Off-sweet finish with medium tartness and medium-high astringent aftertaste. Sweet, but the acidity of the berries balances while the tartness can sting a little in the swallow.”

Overall: “Thick sweet berry flavor is rich and juicy and holds the alcohol well but overpowers any honey character. It’s well made—a standout flavor mead. A great example for those who love intense fruit flavors. The acidity is a little strong, but the strong fruit flavors make it worth it.”
