What the brewers say

English malts, yeast and hops give subtle bitterness with toffee and malty characteristics.

What our panel thought

Copper pour with a firm off white head. Wonderful blend of malt and hops in the aroma. Across the nose, faint caramel with lingering floral bouquet; wonderful blend of malt and hops. On the palate, lovely herbal- and floral-hop flavors with an underlying caramel note; smooth, malty, rich, with woody-spicy hops and crisp bitterness. Slightly sweet finish. Strong, sweet malt flavors verge into brown ale territory; could use a bit more bitterness for balance. Classically English.

What our editors thought

Grape and pear esters with a subtle caramel note in the nose. The sip punches quick with a toasted nut and caramel strike that resolves into a rather strong bitter hop note. Mellows and rounds as it warms in the glass, but the woody bitterness lingers.

Roadmap Brewing Co Mama Dukes

Amber colored beer with an off white head, tiny rocky bubbles. Light pine, herbal thyme nose. Strong bitterness overpowers, thicker bodied underneath, light cherry, fruity, grapefruit hop flavor. Takes me back to the IBU wars days, a bit overpowering in the bittering department. | Big in-your-face pine notes assault the palate and nose on this beer. That pine component lingers powerfully on the tongue. Unfortunately there is not enough sweetness or malt complexity to help balance this, a very one component beer.

Wayfinder Beer Jazz Witch Cold IPA

“Light, pleasant tropical aroma of tangerine, lemongrass, pineapple; hints of cherry, honey, diesel. Flavor delivers a slightly different fruit mix, trading some lemongrass for orange blossom; notes of Necco candy wafers. Bitterness provides a nice grounding for citrus. Fine balance, medium-light sweetness into a fairly dry, clean finish.”

Cellar West Artisan Ales Web Foot

“Piney, lightly dank, melon, and passion fruit aromatics deftly set the stage for a bold, brash flavor profile with equal parts pine and orange peel. The resinous, sticky, and bitter finish, with an assertive dryness, lingers and harmoniously hits that last resonant chord.”
