Lawson’s Finest Liquids Ruby Red Grapefruit Double Sunshine

What the brewers say

This special edition of our American DIPA is made with ruby-red grapefruit, adding an extra layer of mouth-watering, juicy, lush fruit character along with dank tropical aromas.

What our panel thought

Semihazy with lingering grapefruit aromas that transcend into a well-executed balance of grapefruit and malt character. The grapefruit and the hops complement each other well while the malt bill supports and rounds out the picture. Semidry finish begs for another sip.

What our editors thought

Crisply gentle in its expression, the grapefruit expertly expresses itself on the nose with an enticing blend of sweet citrus while the sip walks a tightrope between pithy bitterness and citrus sweetness. Hops support, with a comforting lingering herbal note.

Lawson’s Finest Liquids Triple Sunshine IPA

Fruit-forward with lemon, white grape, orange, and a bit of pineapple. A bit of bread and a hint of toast. A bit of grass and grapefruit as it warms. Quite a bit of white wine super-late in the retronasal. Alcohol is evi-dent but kind of fruity and not harsh.

**Aroma:** “The aroma—amazing! Flowers, mint, spruce, pine. Great complexity. Citrus, pine, resin, earthy, some fruitiness, almost honeydew/cucumber-like. Floral notes—maybe chamomile. A little grainy sweetness.” **Flavor:** “Big juicy American hops up front with notes of melon, slight orange creamsicle, grapefruit, tangerine, and a touch of pineapple. Bitterness is nice and lingering to carry the hop profile through. Caramel pops up in finish. Some sweetness in background of brown sugar or honey. There is this musty funk that might be a yeast thing—dirt? It’s what it needed to not be cookie cutter bland.” **Overall:** “Close to perfect. All about the hops. Malt stands back and supports. Very good display of the fruit character in the hops balancing the hop bitterness. It had some sexiness to it. It’s fantastic.”

Nose is full of pear, honey, very light oak, a touch of mint, and mild funk. Then the beer changes gears, and the flavor has a completely different character with the grape beginning to show its face. Sourness is medium and bright and plays well with the grapes. Low funk. Very drinkable and yet very complex.
