Avery Brewing Company Rumpkin

What the brewers say

“Rumpkin was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger, and aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Huge caramel and toffee notes up front with a decent warming from the alcohol and some rum notes. Spices are a bit subtle, with notes of cinnamon and ginger. Smells like molasses and rum.”

Flavor: “Intensely sweet caramel and vanilla notes, like candi sugar. Pumpkin flavors are pleasant and come through as candied pumpkin. Spices mostly show up as cinnamon (also allspice, clove, and nutmeg), but work well with the intense sweetness and rum-barrel character. Very sweet, from flavor to finish. Lots of warmth and heat from the alcohol.”

Overall: “A slow sipper on the porch after Thanksgiving dinner. Big and bold, very rich and sweet, with great spice and sweet complexity, this is a beer that would be very well suited for aging, but it still drinks amazingly fresh. Incredible barrel character, malt complexity, and spices all mingle for a truly unique pumpkin beer experience.”

Avery Brewing Company Pump[KY]n

**Aroma:** “Huge bourbon and vanilla notes up front with a rich chocolate malt character and good pumpkin spice to support. Very strong bourbon-barrel character.” **Flavor:** “Massive vanilla and bourbon pair nicely with spice (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg) profile and chocolate malt flavors. Huge chewy body. Finishes big and very warming with a surprisingly hoppy dryness. There is so much going on in this beer that it could easily become a trainwreck, but the brewers have done a masterful job of structuring each element to complement the others.” **Overall:** “Extremely well-balanced and scarily drinkable. The marriage of bourbon, pumpkin, spice, and chocolate is simply divine. The pumpkin spice and dark malt base are a great match, and the bourbon-barrel character pushes it over the top. Loved the vanilla and the slight dryness in the finish. Wow! It drinks incredibly nice now, and I can imagine what some aging would do! Don’t let this one get away.”

__Aroma:__ “Earthy, slightly spicy coffee notes throughout, with some chocolate and roast beneath in a supporting role. Some tobacco, bubblegum ester, cacao nibs, caramel, mild soy, and vanilla bean as well—it’s like a Tootsie Roll.” __Flavor:__ “Rich, sweet dark chocolate with cherry and vanilla throughout. Notes of caramel, brown sugar, and dark roast bring out some malted-milk ball flavors. Plenty of vanilla and oak and oak tannins, with a delicate finish of tobacco. The body is quite sweet, but dries out on the finish. This is a very big stout.” __Overall:__ “Nuanced, balanced, and exactly what I want in a barrel-aged coffee stout. It’s really intense, but without the harsh edges that coffee can have. It’s a nice blend of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit, and has a touch of lasting sweetness. It’s smooth and delightful—close to perfect.”

Avery Brewing Company Maharaja

**Aroma:** “Citrus, orange, grapefruit but with a supporting caramel sweetness and notes of honey. Slight alcohol sweetness.” **Flavor:** “Sweeter and hotter, liked the citrus, liked the lemon. Nice sweetness from honey followed by citrus and lemon zest notes. Could have used a little less malt sweetness. Clean finish with good bitterness.” **Overall:** “Doesn’t hide its alcohol but uses it to support the big citrus hops profile. Balanced with some malt sweetness. Very tasty. Surprisingly smooth for the level of alcohol in it.”
