Allagash Brewing Company Saison

What the brewers say

“Allagash Saison is our interpretation of a classic Belgian farmhouse style. It’s golden hued, brewed with a 2-Row blend, malted rye, oats, and dark Belgian candi sugar and hopped with Tettnang, Bravo, and Cascade hops. Fermented with a traditional saison yeast strain, Saison exhibits notes of spice and tropical fruit in the aroma. Citrus and a peppery spice dominate the flavor.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Sweet aroma of bubblegum and lots of lemon/orange candy. Nice floral notes balance the citrus. Almost like a cherry blossom. Some honey.”

Flavor: “Moderately sweet malt flavor and citrus with some spicy, peppery notes. Strong lemon zest flavor. Sweetness carries through but is balanced by other complexities. Dryness indicative of light sugar as with a tripel. A little too bitter in the finish, like a lemon rind. Some warmth, but not hot.”

Overall: “Strongly flavored and pleasant, but the aroma is a little sweet. Good balance of spices. Carbonic, bitter, and refreshing.”

Blackberry Farm Brewery Classic Saison

**Aroma:** “Moderate white pepper note with a light fruit and lemon ester. Light spicy notes of lemongrass and white pepper. Low herbal earth hops. A very clean-smelling beer.” **Flavor:** “Big lemon and light grape notes up front with plenty of carbonation. Moderate grapefruit with a pithiness creates a dryness at the end of the sip. Tangerine carries through with light peppery phenols and white bread. Low malt sweetness up front gives way to a mix of moderate acidity and bitterness. Earthy hops presence with a slight floral and basil flavor. Clean and well-balanced. Hops bitterness lingers with a slight tartness in the back.” **Overall:** “Moderate carbonation covers up a lot of the fruitiness up front, but once it dissipates there is more sweetness and a moderate spicy note. The light mix of esters, phenols, and bready malt give a nice complexity, while the dry tart finish and high carbonation make it very refreshing.”

Allagash Brewing Company Allagash Dubbel Ale

**Aroma:** “Slight dark fruit notes with plum, dried cherries, some fig, and moderate banana. Low hops aroma, floral and herbal. Some dark, sweet malt aroma. A very low alcohol note that increases as it starts to warm.” **Flavor:** “Bananas, caramel, toffee, and graham cracker push forward with fruity peach and cherry notes. A crisp hops bitterness and flavor in the finish provide structure upon which the malt and yeasty esters are layered. Nice carbonic bite enhances the overall drinkability. Aftertaste is long lasting and as it starts to warm, esters become prominent and the slight alcohol heat subsides.” **Overall:** “Medium fruit, estery beer with strong plum and banana fruit notes that are dominated by a moderate alcohol. Nice malty beer with mellow fruitiness and a bit of spicy phenolic. A well-executed, fairly classic Belgian dubbel. Definitely one to recommend to a friend.”

Allagash Brewing Company White

**Aroma:** “Very light wheat with notes of coriander and a little bit of hop spice blended with slight sweetness and subtle hop notes. Mainly coriander and pepper notes.” **Flavor:** “Moderate sweetness with a strong bittering finish. Significantly more hop bitterness than would be expected for the style. Complex for a wit, with slight sweetness and herbal earthy notes. Sweet citrus in the finish. Big body despite carbonation and crispness. Almost a viscous mouthfeel.” **Overall:** “Wheat and spice character are well done, but the hop utilization or timing adds a bitterness that’s atypical for the style. A refreshing and different take on a wit. More spiced than usual but still finishes with sweet citrus. Good, crisp, refreshing beer.”
