Samuel Smith's Organic Cider

What the brewers say

“Brilliant straw colour, light body, clean apple flavour, and a gentle apple blossom finish.”

What our panel thought

“Great apple presentation throughout. A bit sweet on balance, lingers on the tongue with light floral spicy notes. Clean, bright, and pleasingly effervescent. Simple apple sweetness with just a touch of tannins. Very accessible and drinkable.”

What our editors thought

“Light apple aroma leads to a soft and subtle sip—simple with an earthy complexity that feels rich without being overbearing.”

J.K.'s Scrumpy / Almar Orchards Orchard Gate Gold Organic Hard Cider

**Aroma:** “Rustic, earthy complexity in the aroma, almost sweaty. Apple character isn’t cleanly expressed. Apple juice: sweet and simple. Over-ripe apple notes with some spiciness. A touch of acidity.” **Flavor:** “Medium-sweet red ripe apples. Some brown turbinado sugar notes. Acidity nicely balances the residual sugar. Under-attenuated. Tastes more like apple juice than cider. Light buttery diacetyl. Very soft palate. Finish even seems malty. Spiced candy-like sweetness.” **Overall:** “Soft apple flavor expresses much better in the flavor than in the aroma. Lovely complexity in the flavor, earthy and rich. Cloudy. Were it not for the light hint of fermented apple, I would assume this is raw apple cider. A bit too sweet.”

Samuel Smith Old Brewery Organic Cider

**Aroma:** “A big blend of red and green apples with light sugar, a bit of alcohol, and low spicy yeast elements. It’s very bright with light hints of grape and floral notes. Slight chardonnay-like fermenta- tion esters and a touch of malic acidity.” **Flavor:** “Super clean fermentation char- acteristics and big apple flavors lead to a medium-dry slightly tannic finish with lingering tart/sour notes. Slightly bitter in the finish, but not off-putting. Appropriate low alcohol warming and moderately low carbonation mitigates the bitterness. Light apple, fruity, with a touch of that grape from the nose.” **Overall:** “Full-flavored cider with big apple flavors that still tastes ‘crushable.’ Simple and straightforward, the apple is so clear and obvious, but finishes crisp with a cleansing carbonation and acidity. Strong apple aroma and other esters make this a pleasant drink that you can drink for some time.”

Angry Orchard Cider Company Muse

**Aroma:** “Raw apple juice and sweet apple-blossom notes on the nose are backed up with light peach/almond, red caramel apple, plum, cotton candy, and red wine notes.” **Flavor:** “Red Delicious abounds. There’s a noticeable alcohol heat and nice tart acidity. Simple apple sweetness isn’t cloying, and the esters really push through—grape, peach, a little pine- apple. Light marzipan with a moderate tartness to balance, but definitely leans sweet. A touch of oaky astringency adds depth and interest. Finishes soft with a very mild touch of alcohol. Strong carbonation is very effervescent.” **Overall:** “Sweet and fairly simple apple with an interesting fermentation charac- ter and complexity from layers of apple and dark fruits expressing throughout. Tannic red wine-like character is a very pleasant counterpoint to the red apple character.”
