Scratch Brewing Company Strawberry Sumac

What the brewers say

Sour ale brewed without hops, fermented with our wild house culture, refermented on strawberries and sumac.

What our panel thought

Strawberries blend with a sweet, fruity/spicy malt character, suggesting a Belgian golden. Nicely balanced acid and fruit. The flavor stays harmonious, offering a light tart lemony balance to the strawberry sweetness and pulling along some peach. Each sip brings more depth from everything but the strawberries, whether it's a spicy tingle or citrus brightness. Lingers nicely.

What our editors thought

A soft herbal and faintly strawberry nose offers an earthy tilt with just a touch of tannic spice. The sip leads with a rather pointed impression of sweetness wrapped up with the lactic acidity that effectively knocks it down without overwhelming the delicate strawberry notes. Weird, but it works, and the earthy element complements the fruitier flavors.
