What the brewers say

Strong peach and apricot notes with nuances of berries, cantaloupe, and citrus. Mild malt backbone balances and complements the hops presence for a full-bodied, bold IPA.

What our panel thought

Very restrained aroma, hints of toast and light citrus. Citrus and pine hops flavors with a pleasant, clean, and aggressive bitterness on the finish. Great balance, lingering toast and resinous bitterness. Bold bright flavors with great balance throughout. A down-to-earth classic DIPA.

What our editors thought

A crisp clean nose hints at red peach and cantaloupe while a medium bitterness in the sip feels properly in place and substantial in weight as it nicely balances the fruit, ethanol, and malt sweetness.

Burial Beer Co A Most Melancholy Visual Double India Pale Ale

“Hints of sulfur-like garlic and onion in aroma fade into pine, wood, and tangerine. Sweet garlic and onion emerge in flavor, supported by peppery spice and light citrus. Not-so-soft mouthfeel accentuates a lingering bitterness.”

Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits Sculpin IPA

**Aroma:** “Super piney and resinous with a very light caramel sweetness. A basic tension between candy-like citrus and floral notes set against green, dank, and white-wine aromas.” **Flavor:** “Very bright with aggressive piney hops flavors, moderate malt, a slight garlic flavor, and grapefruit and pine notes. Dialed-in bitterness hits the mark. Lots of hoppy goodness with lemon candy, green, and floral notes. Delicious. Juicy hops notes with hints of tangerine, lemon candy, green and floral notes, plus balancing pine and dankness.” **Overall:** “Lovely resinous character well-balanced by the malt sweetness. Drinks like the stronger side of IPA, bordering on double IPA. A well-crafted blend of malt, hops, and alcohol—exactly what an IPA should be. Complex hops character with an exciting blend of classic and contemporary hops character. A full-bodied, full-flavored IPA with tons of nuance with each sip. This is extremely well executed—a great beer.”

Ska Brewing Co. Modus Mandarina India Pale Ale

__Aroma:__ “Malt-forward, with caramel and toasted notes. Moderate grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, and orange combine with the spicy hops aroma and with the malt, come through like orange marmalade. Dig deeper, and you find zest-like aromas along with floral notes. Not necessarily coming through as an IPA.” __Flavor:__ “The orange comes through more on the tongue, with pithy and astringent qualities from the rind. Grapefruit notes mix with lemon, followed by toasty and biscuit malt. The bitterness counteracts the malty backbone well, lingering long after the flavor is gone, without being overwhelming. Spicy hops tend to be overwhelmed by the bitterness of the orange.” __Overall:__ “This beer comes across as a malty PNW IPA. Lots of specialty malts and a hefty dose of IBUs make it an interesting interpretation of the style, with plenty of orange to accent. The pithiness might be hard to drink for some because of all the lingering bitterness it adds.”
