What our panel thought

“Smoky phenolics dominate the nose, coming through as woody, complementing a light spicy phenol. Nice complexity without a hint of campfire. Images of ham hocks come to mind. Once in the mouth, the firm tartness, well-handled salt, smoke, and fruity esters (lemon and tangerine) meld into an interesting flavor that is a nice departure from the crowd. Very light and easy-drinking, but interest is piqued due to the depth of flavors.”

What our editors thought

“Meaty bacon smoked note in the nose takes the forefront, but the sip brings out a pale citrus—lemon, orange—to soften the intense phenolics. The result is weird and polarizing—fascinating to smoked-beer fans. Others may find it impenetrable.”

Weldwerks Brewing Just Gose

“Pleasantly refreshing. Light cherry esters with some tart wheat notes on the nose. Flavor is lemony with a soft light acidity and spritzy effervescence. Brackish enough to emphasize the tart. Easy-drinking. Here comes the sun!”

Jagged Mountain Brewery Grouse Mountain Blood Orange Gose

__Aroma:__ “Light citrus and grapefruit pith, and orange, grapefruit, and lime, complemented by light lactic sourness. Fruity and juicy on the nose, with an ever-so-slight wheat character malt at the back.” __Flavor:__ “Starts off with light sweetness and orange juiciness, and then becomes very tart citrus and lightly pithy. Notes of hops bitterness come in, along with lemon and lime. Strong lactic acid and bright acidity that linger in the back and on the cheeks. Salt carries throughout and is really fantastic. The finish is clean and sweet and tart, inviting you back for another sip.” __Overall:__ “Huge citrus bomb that has great tartness and sweetness with acidity that’s through the roof—like a Warheads candy. Juicy and thirst-quenching, and the touch of salt would make you want to drink more, while hitting the spot. An interesting contrast of flavors with some complexity and character.”

Westbrook Brewing Company Gose

**Aroma:** “Fresh hay with lemon and grapefruit. Bright, sharply acidic, lactic nip in the nose. Salty. Tangy, fruity, citrus notes. Very light malt sweetness. Sour and fruity with some goat and barnyard.” **Flavor:** “Good, clean lactic acid tartness. Moderate sweet malty wheat with salt and high carbonation. Very lemony. Goaty in a good way. Finishes dry and slightly earthy with a nice mineral character. Crisp and refreshing.” **Overall:** “An excellent sour for the summer! A very clean beer with nice lemony tartness. The balance of salt, sourness, and sweetness makes this a great beer to have with food. This would be killer with fried chicken and potato salad, or even to cut through a beurre blanc. Light and refreshing.”
