Hoppin’ Frog BA T.O.R.I.S. the Tyrant Triple Oatmeal-Imperial Stout

What the brewers say

Super-tasty rich, dark, and flavorful with complementary characteristics of oak, vanilla, and whiskey.

What our panel thought

Black as night with a deep tan head. Dominant barrel character shines through across the nose with some lingering licorice notes. Luscious and big. Spice notes across the palate with an assertive barrel character that overpowers the malt backbone.

What our editors thought

The nose is umami rich, with an almost Turkish coffee cardamom character, and follows through on that rich, sweet expectation but maintains tight control with a strong espresso roast backbone through the sip. Co-hesive and thoughtfully considered.

Hoppin' Frog Brewery T.O.R.I.S. The Tyrant

**Aroma:** “Heavy roast up front, with a touch of ash and smoke. Some chocolate, toffee, and coffee notes are present, as well as a really nice earthy, woodsy flavor that emerges as it warms. Some fruity yeast esters of banana, dark cherry, stone fruit, and pear. Some rich malt and bread crust, with black licorice and molasses.” **Flavor:** “Similar to the aroma with its heavy roast, but that’s kept in check with some nice dark malt sweetness. Dark chocolate and light vanilla, with some dark cherry, raisin, earthy, and herbal notes, add complexity. The body is smooth and velvety, and it’s rich and chewy throughout. There’s a nice huskiness from the roasted malt that offsets the conspicuous heat from the alcohol, but it’s the chocolate flavor that pulls everything together. Finishes with light bitterness, medium smoke, and big chocolate.” **Overall:** “This is a delicious beer that slightly tweaks convention and creates a unique and awesome beer. It’s a pretty solid imperial stout—not offensive for the high alcohol, and all the dark roasty components come together fairly well. It will hold up to the richest of desserts or the boldest of cigars. Definitely a sipper!”

Urban Roots Brewing & Smokehouse Demons Run Coconut Vanilla

“Notes of coconut in the aroma are balanced by hints of cinnamon, chocolate, coffee. The coconut dominates the flavor (with hints of roast marshmallow, chocolate) but an earthy coconut-water element supports the sweeter coconut-flesh notes. Booziness strips away some of the nuance.”

Foothills Brewing Dead & Berried Imperial Stout

“Dark berries, fudge, roast, and licorice on the nose. In the flavor, robust roast, berry tartness, and bitterness shove sweetness to the back. Tootsie Roll and caramel as it warms.”
