The Referend Bier Blendery Mont Sainte-Victoire Houblon

What the brewers say

Our spontaneously fermented impression of saison, brewed with New Jersey wheat, rye, buckwheat, and oats, dry hopped with Strisselspalt and Saphir.

What our panel thought

Fruity nose with citrus, apple, persimmon, blueberries, tangerine, plus minty-grassy hops and earthy leather. In the flavor, tart citric bite joins minty hops, backed by grapefruit peel. Slightly astringent. Disjointed—a chasm between nose and tongue.

What our editors thought

Dueling earthy funk and lemony hops in the nose. The sip is disjointed, as high notes push lemon acidity, then a big mid-tone gap before earthy bass-notes drop. Unsatisfying for hops fans, lacking the nuance of better wild ales.

The Referend Bier Blendery Berliner Messe Cuvée Schneeule

Nose of lemon, wet hay, leather, grapefruit, horseblanket. Citrus flavor, also with pronounced pineapple, on bright, crisp acidity. As initial punch fades, subtle complexities emerge: peach, tangerine, and a light lingering tannic character. Refreshing.

The Referend Bier Blendery Sanctus Blend No.3

Cherry, blackberry, and currant aroma with a hint of tannin and leather. Flavor: Juicy blackberries with hints of vanilla, leather, oak. Low initial sweetness moves into a moderate-strong acidity that fades to a dry, somewhat tannic, finish.

Black Project Oxcart

Herbal, with floral and bright citrus notes; some chlorophenols, which carry into the flavor. Medium acidity and funk; lemon, orange, herbs, and some vinous light oak.
