What the brewers say

“A Knob Creek barrel-aged imperial stout with toasted coconut and Indonesian vanilla.”

What our panel thought

“Dark chocolate, coconut, coffee, milk, vanilla greet the nose. A kick of bourbon heat starts off the flavor—a complex dance of dark malt, vanilla, coconut mellowed by a sweetness tempered by a bitter backbone.”

What our editors thought

“Strong bourbon and a flaky croissant element punch up the vanilla and coconut in the aroma. The flavors lose some definition on the palate, spreading into a thin chocolate ganache with sweet coconut highlights.”

The Virginia Beer Company Ripe As Rain

“Tropical elements of pineapple, mango, guava, and orange juice mingle with hints of wood and pine in the nose. The bitterness hits early in the sip and comes across more pine-forward than tropical. The mouthfeel is a bit chalky, further accentuating the bitterness and drying out the finish a bit too much. Soft body.”

New Image Brewing Co Noema B3

“Nutmeg adds an interesting complexity to the aroma yielding sweet vermouth, wintergreen. Cinnamon flavor up front; licorice, spearmint, nutmeg toward the end that blends with a significant heat, medium finish. A thick and chewy experience that coats the tongue and lingers. Interesting, different, tasty.”

Liquid Mechanics Brewing Company Pocket Full of Shells (2020)

“Strong aromas of caramel, toffee, and toasted coconut, almost cloying. Smooth woody toffee notes leave an aftertaste of bready tropical vanilla and oak.”
