TRVE Brewing Co Strange Gateways

What the brewers say

“Black lager brewed with Troubadour Serenade, Blue Ballad, Mod 300, and Rootshoot Pilsner.”

What our panel thought

“Coffee, dark chocolate, and dark caramel notes complement a decidedly roast-malt-forward nose with hints of sweet floral hops in the background. Despite the roast-forward aroma, a supremely clean, lightly sweet caramel-like initial flavor slowly fades into a pleasant light floral bitterness that lingers into the finish, as hints of roast and light smoke emerge.”

What our editors thought

“Bold dark malt nose, bright carb, and a slight acidic tinge push a strong dark body with wood and bread-crust notes.”

TRVE Brewing Co. Cold Pilsner

“Light lemon aromatics under a pillowy white head. Good balance, medium-dry finish, light sulfur, subdued but noticeable citrus flavor in the hops. A nice, fresh keller pils.”

Weathered Souls Brewing Co. Castling

Classic nose of roast malt, coffee, hints of bakers chocolate. Flavor pairs fruity-coffee roast and bread-like malt with a spicy hop partner; hints of mint, rye, bitter chocolate. Body seems a bit thin. Malt character lingers with subtle roast and residual sweetness.

Roadmap Brewing Co Penguin Suit

“Dark roast notes of coffee, dark chocolate, and smoke in the aroma are accentuated by a hint of spicy herbal hops. Semisweet chocolate notes dominate the initial sip and slowly fade, allowing hints of coffee, toffee, and dark caramel to emerge along with floral and herbal hop bitterness that lingers into the crisp finish.”
