Two Roads Brewing Co Igor's Dream

What the brewers say

“Unorthodox Russian imperial stout made with rye and aged in bourbon and rye-whiskey barrels.”

What our panel thought

“Aroma is a lovely blend of rye and whiskey. The flavor is carried by chocolate, coffee, toast with low cherry, fig esters. Hops are higher in this one, with an odd dill/herbal note.”

What our editors thought

“Bold lime and forest hop notes in the aroma play against light oak and cacao, while the sip doubles down on hops with a zesty lime bite amplified by the dry chocolate body.”

Big Grove Brewery and Taproom Richard the Whale

“Subdued aroma highlights fruity esters, oak, spirits with a hint of chocolate, raisin, toast. Nice balance between the barrel and the beer. Flavor is sharply boozy, with the roast elements subsumed in the boozy concoction. Clean and focused on the booze. Enjoyable, but lacks complexity. Oddly sweet. Simple.”

__Aroma:__ “Rich roast and chocolate up front, with a light smokiness and a touch of malt sweetness. There’s a light dark- fruit/date note, with cherry, dark fig, and vanilla. The sugar sweetness and smoke reminds me of candied bacon.” __Flavor:__ “Chocolate and roast add complexity up front, with a light alcohol warming toward the finish. Notes of rum, but also a note of tequila. The oak quality of the barrel is evident. Flashes of cocoa and vanilla weave through dark fruits of fig, plum, prune, and raisin. Intense flavors, but no single flavor dominated.” __Overall:__ “This beer is hot and boozy, with a rum presence that’s really just complexity and heat. Could use some aging to let the alcohol mellow out and the flavors shine through. A beautifully rich and complex beer that takes a minute to wrap your head around, but once you’re into it, you don’t want to leave.”

**Aroma:** “An interesting combination of roasted malt and subtle floral, juicy hops notes. Medium dark chocolate blends well with vanilla from the barrel and is delicately accentuated by bright fruity esters (cherry, pineapple, orange). Sweet but slightly bitter. Slight bourbon and some oak character.” **Flavor:** “A surprisingly unique citrus and chocolate combination with a decent amount of roast added for good measure. Some nice barrel characteristics (vanilla), but they only enhance the wild show going on between whatever hops these brewers are using and the delicious chocolatiness they’ve developed.” **Overall:** “One of the most unique barrel-aged stouts I’ve ever enjoyed. The curious use of juicy hops doesn’t distract but enhances the rich stout and barrel flavors already present. Well crafted! Really enjoyed the orange/pineapple esters which are not typical of the style.”
