Upslope Brewing Company - Flatiron Park Oatmeal Stout

What the brewers say

“Smooth, roasty, sessionable. Full flavor, robust body. Smooth finish.”

What our panel thought

“Malt aroma medium-strong, roasted with some chocolate, coffee. Chocolate and dark-roasted malt balance nicely in the flavor. A pleasant nutty, toffee malt character mid-palate. Firm bitterness balanced by medium body, a light sweetness. Some lingering astringency in the dry mineral finish.”

What our editors thought

“Burnt caramel and bread in the aroma with very light chocolate and a light, sweet floral note. Light caramel and bready chocolate flavor with the faintest hints of wet charred wood and orange.”

Union Craft Brewing Snow Pants

“Nice chocolate-latte aroma, lightly sweet. Floral, earthy hop notes. More roast malt in the flavor than in the aroma. Assertive bitterness dries the finish. Lingering dark-chocolate aftertaste.”

Hi-Wire Brewing - South Slope Specialty Brewery Bed of Nails

“A tarry licorice aroma with a citrus swirled in. Decadent dark-chocolate cake batter in the flavor, balanced by an equal helping of citrus hops. Desserty molasses with orange peel expressed over the top.”

Upslope Brewing Company Oatmeal Stout

**Aroma:** “Rich complex roast. Very low ester profile. Notes of coffee, some chocolate, dry cocoa sweetness. Toasty malt with a hint of caramel. As it warms, more chocolate and and some dark roasted roast.” **Flavor:** “Medium sweet with slightly tart finish. Sharp chocolate up front with a rich roastiness that takes over quickly after. Characteristic silkiness of oatmeal stout. Medium smoke note that extends into the aftertaste. A sharp bitterness from the roast character reminds me of an iced coffee. Some nutty notes, some dry chocolate sweetness and bitterness. Thin bodied. Earthy hops come through near the end as well as dark roasted malt. Finish is quite dry.” **Overall:** “Rich and complex, yet easy drinking. Very dry. Malt is simple but works well, and the slight earthy hops are good. A high roast creates an astringency and almost a bitterness. Medium smoke note that also contributes to the astringency. This beer had some nice roast qualities, but the roast itself seemed to dominate the flavor. Somewhat thin for an oatmeal stout.”
