What our panel thought

“Subtle. Smells like a watermelon-rind pickle; a touch of acetic acid peeking through. Flavor carries strong Jolly Rancher watermelon sour flavor, a hint of sweetness floating throughout; seems a touch artificial. Acidity fairly well-balanced, fairly refreshing, but the vinegar-like pickle lingers a bit beyond the beer.”

What our editors thought

“Salt here lends the watermelon flavor an almost cucumber-like note on the nose. The sip is intensely sweet, which highlights the sweet fruit notes above all others, but it structures the flavor that would otherwise get lost.

Anderson Valley Brewing Co. Framboise Rose Gose

“Muddled raspberry and dried red chilies dominate the nose. First impression was raspberry seltzer cut with a bit of lime. A hint of salt in the last bit of flavor—like the watery salt from an almost-empty margarita.”

Untitled Art Spritzer Weisse

“Earthy, vegetal aromas mingle with light tropical fruit and peach—curiously inviting. Flavor is lightly malty and much more bitter, tannic, and grainy than expected. Only lightly sour and acidic. Husky astringency dries out the finish and accentuates vegetal character. Caught in the no-man’s-land between crisp light lager and kettle sour.”

Terrapin Watermelon Gose

**Aroma:** “Under-ripe watermelon up front gives way to a hint of funk that comes across a bit musty, but not unpleasant. Tartness comes through as lime juice, perhaps pineapple. Earthy undertone with a phenolic edge, with a vegetal note and musty/sweaty aromas.” **Flavor:** “Underripe or watermelon rind with some lemon and lime mixed in, almost like a watermelon margarita. That tartness is accentuated by a hint of salt that’s funky and refreshing. Some of the fruit sweetness creeps back into the finish, and the aftertaste is all melon and salt.” **Overall:** “A challenging spiced sour beer—the extra spice is just on the far side of identifiable. It tastes like trying to get the last hint of watermelon from the rind, eaten with salty fingers. Not terribly complex, but enough fruit to be interesting and refreshing on a warm summer day.”
