Upland Brewing Wheat Ale

What the brewers say

“In the tradition of the Belgian wit–style, Upland Wheat Ale is unfiltered, allowing suspended yeast to create a cloudy, golden appearance. This is an everyday, every meal type of beer. It’s comforting on a cold winter day and refreshing on a hot summer evening.”

What our panel thought

A wonderfully complex aroma of spicy/peppery, citrus, and yeasty notes that gives way to an equally complex flavor profile. Flavors of pear, clove, and pepper intermingle with the wheat-malt backbone and are complemented by a clean, but distinct, hops bitterness. It finishes smooth yet clean, and the moderately high level of carbonation cleans the palate and gets you ready to jump right back in. Hard to believe so much can be packed into such a lightly colored beer.”

What our editors thought

“Gentle nose gives way to soft citrus sweetness in the sip that pulses in waves. Nicely balanced on the light side of the witbier spectrum with apparent but not excessive yeast esters. Very light yet interesting depth. A touch of bitterness rolls in under those gentle orange waves, offering structure without weighing it down.”

New Belgium Fat Tire Belgian White

“A pleasant, clean, and lemony aroma gives way to an enjoyably complex flavor combination of sweet wheat malt, floral, citrus, and soapy hops, and lightly spicy coriander and fermentation-derived notes. Wonderfully clean and complex.”

Allagash Brewing Company Allagash White

“Slightly hazy yellow with a nice white head. A somewhat sharp farmhouse nose. Pepper, clove, and coriander intertwine in the flavor and leave a spicy impression on the tongue. A slight bitterness also makes an appearance and works well with the spice component. Light coriander, lemon, and orange peel present themselves in the off-dry finish. A very fun and different take on the classical style.”

Boulevard Brewing Company Unfiltered Wheat

**Aroma:** “The first impression is of grassy and herbal hops, but clove, plastic, smoke, and slightly medicinal phenols followed. A grainy wheat-bread aroma, with a very German hefeweizen yeast, and lemon and citrus in the background.” **Flavor:** “Lightly tart bready flavor, with a malty sweetness that gives a full-bodied texture. Cleaner phenols here, primarily clove and some smoke, with some bright banana. An earthy and herbal hops bitterness with a touch of citrus. Perhaps a little aggressive for a German-style wheat, but light for an American-style wheat.” **Overall:** “A satisfying wheat that’s fairly balanced and very drinkable. The finish is somewhat harsh, but this can be a good thing since this style can be on the bland side. Dry and refreshing with hoppy citrus notes, and with the banana and bready malt, it was like liquid bread.”
