Cellarmaker Wild Gooseberry Chase

What the brewers say

"100% Nelson Sauvin Hopped."

What our panel thought

"Diverse aromas: black peppercorns, lemon, mushroom, lemongrass, grape must. Aromas weave seamlessly into flavor, with pronounced grapefruit pith lingering from front to back. Soft sweetness lifts the fruity grape character. Bitterness is a bit restrained, allowing the vinous notes to linger."

What our editors thought

"Dry, pungent, woody, tannic, almost gueuze-like, with subtle mid-tone vinous notes underneath. The sip is dry, with nary a stray Plato to be found. Thoughtfully constructed with a sophistication not typically found in ‘IPA.’"

Cellarmaker Brewing Company Night of the Living Dank

“Mango tree in a pine forest. Enticing aroma evokes lemon drops, freshly torn lime peel, and a piney hit of rosemary. The hop flavor emerges beautifully on the palate, given a boost from light malt sweetness and smooth, even bitterness. Lingering impression of lemon-lime candy.”

King Harbor Brewing Co Between the Devil and the Deep

“Coconut hop profile sideswipes right up next to citrus pith both in the nose and flavor. Beautiful and pillowy soft body; delicate sweetness underlies a mix of tropical hop character. Understated, but very well crafted and balanced.”

Outer Range Pillow Stacks

Aroma: “Grassy and herbal with some citrus (orange peel and grapefruit) and spicy notes of mint, pepper, and earthy beneath. Some green onion and maybe a touch of garlic. Some peach on retronasal.” Flavor: “Highly bitter, but enough residual sweetness to make it balanced for the style. The orange highlights dance on top of the somewhat grassy and green-onion notes with the blend of herbal tones pulling things together. Malt is a secondary thought. Finish isn’t overly bitter with a slight sweetness on the very end.” Overall: “Great hops complexity. If you want to visit the lower latitudes, this is the beer for you. It will give you that tropical fruit–market experience in your mouth. Maybe not for everyone, but pretty intriguing.”
