What the brewers say

“Bourbon and chocolate under the nose, then chased with vanilla and caramel throughout with legs.”

What our panel thought

“Blueberry Danish, cocoa nibs, coconut, caramel on the nose. Syrupy flavor profile of dark chocolate, vanilla cones, bourbon, poppyseed muffins. Alcohol and cinnamon spice provide balancing heat. Toffee, dark fruit move between the foreground and background. The alcohol is omnipresent.”

What our editors thought

“Dark notes in the nose—licorice, roasted malt. The sip softens with a rounded sweetness that downplays the character of the nose.”

Wolf's Ridge Brewing Maple Whiskey Double Barrel Dire Wolf

“Aroma is mostly oak and whiskey with some vanilla, fruity esters, chocolate, roasted malt in the background. Initial taste reveals strong alcohol balanced with sweet, almost syrupy, malt. Maple comes through in the aftertaste. Finishes quite sweet.”

North Park Beer Co. Heaven Hill Barrel-Aged Original Geezer

“Dark chocolate cake with a sidecar of whiskey. Caramel, toffee, chocolate aroma notes are balanced by a hint of citrus hops. Alcoholic heat shows up early in the sip along with that citrus bitterness, chewy caramel, toasted almond, cinnamon.”

Tallgrass Brewing Company Bourbon Buffalo Sweat

**Aroma:** “A nice complexity in the aroma. Bourbon, vanilla, oak, dark chocolate malt, and coffee with a heavy helping of caramel. A bit of toasty malt in the background. A sweet milk-like creaminess. Light vanilla ice cream thing going on.” **Flavor:** “The beer has a nice smoothness. The roast is present with some coffee and chocolate sweetness, as well as bourbon and some dark cherry notes. Hints of vanilla cream sweetness. The body is slightly light but expected at this strength. The beer finishes with some complexity of chocolate and vanilla and a slight dryness. It's not as sweet as the aroma would suggest. There are oak notes in the aftertaste.” **Overall:** “The flavors of this beer worked together throughout the taste. The right amount of vanilla and bourbon sweetness cut the roasty chocolate dryness. It was sweet, but not too sweet. A nice bourbon-barrel stout that’s not a night-ender.”
