Wolf's Ridge Brewing Wheelhouse

What the brewers say

Rich, dark, and roasty; lagered for six weeks before release.

What our panel thought

Dominant roast, coffee, hints of nuts, peppermint. Flavor doubles down on roast, with caramel sweetness, coffee, and nutty flavors complementing the bittersweet base. Think dark-roast iced coffee, with a touch of caramel macchiato. Finish slowly dries and a touch of warmth tops it off.

What our editors thought

Toasty caramel malt shoots across the nose like ‘80s background lasers, retro-futuristic nostalgic. The sip channels campfire vibes, with hefty chocolate and marshmallow over a faint smoky base. A toasty bitterness that cleans the palate.

Incendiary Brewing Company Baltic Porter

Inviting nose—hints of licorice, cinnamon, nutmeg, coffee, and sweet cream play with caramel and chocolate malt. In the flavor, roast malt emerges, imparting coffee-like bitterness and nuttiness—chocolate-covered cherry, cocoa dust, coconut, light caramel sweetness. Aftertaste lingers on sweet mocha.

Jack's Abby Barrel-Aged Framinghammer

Aroma: “Hints of booze, chocolate, and toasted coconut. Barrel components stand out—some wood but mostly whiskey.” Flavor: “Prominent smooth, creamy milk chocolate and coffee. Low supporting hops. Spicy woody alcohol flavor. Complex malt richness with toffee and coconut is accentuated by the barrel-aged qualities that add a tannic wood dryness, some toasted coconut, and a pleasant underlying boozy warmth. Finish is rich, but not overly cloying.” Overall: “Great underlying Baltic porter with interesting barrel-aged character. It certainly comes across pretty strong and a bit boozy, but you’re paying for a barrel-aged beer so it should slap you around a bit.”

Wolf's Ridge Brewing Onsetter

“An unexpected forest of hoppy pine greets the nose; light caramel, toast, baker’s chocolate. Aggressively American bitterness with toffee, dark chocolate, roast, a moderately bready backbone. Piney grapefruit hops. Wrapped up in a creamy mouthfeel, this works.”
