Flying Dog Brewery Woody Creek

What the brewers say

“Woody Creek is light and refreshing for a reason, so be careful not to overpower it with heavy foods. Flavor notes: Refreshing and light citrus notes with subtle wheat, coriander, and orange flavors.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Nice, grainy, sweet wheat character and slight citrus notes. Low levels of DMS (canned corn) aroma. Peppercorn and herbal dill notes along with a tobacco, cigar, or pipe aroma. This aroma dissipates somewhat and coriander comes to the fore.”

Flavor: “Good profile of wheat character, with a slight tartness and mild hops kick. Creamy body. Citrus character is present more in the finish with an acidic bite and carbonic twang that makes for a nice, crisp finish. Big coriander flavor with light tobacco note. Crisp and refreshing.”

Overall: “Refreshing sweet profile showcases the wheat well. Good tannic bite. Balance and flavors are spot on except for slight DMS in the aroma. One of the hoppier wits we’ve tried.”

Shiner / Spoetzl Brewery White Wing

**Aroma:** “Strong, perfumey coriander with deep, earthy notes, backed up by a light, sweet wheat aroma.” **Flavor:** “Big coriander notes! Crisp and refreshing with a good carbonic bite. Clear but creamy mouthfeel (almost like Cream of Wheat) with a nice grainy sweetness in the background. Well balanced with some tartness and a crisp, slightly cidery finish.” **Overall:** “Good example of the style except for an odd earthy aroma. But very clean and refreshing. Spices are well balanced with the malt. Refreshing and herbal character is showcased. An easy drinking wit, but if you don’t like coriander, you won’t like this beer!”

Bell's Brewery, Inc. Lager of the Lakes

**Aroma:** “Light malt with subtle sulfur notes. Moderate German hops aroma. Some fruity esters, sweetness, and yeast aroma. A bit of corn-like, wheaty sweetness. Citrusy notes of lemon and orange.” **Flavor:** “Smooth malt offset by light hop bitterness. Sweet, corn-like, and wheaty. Spicy hops slide right into the finishing bitterness. Very fruity, but light alcohol flavor. Yeasty, yet clean profile. Light carbonic bite.” **Overall:** “Crisp and refreshing, a great beer to take to a cookout. Neither a pils nor a Vienna lager, just an easy-drinking beer. Finish is cleaner than an ale, yet not quite lager-like. If someone brought this to a summer barbecue, everyone would be happy.”

Victory Brewing Company Swing

**Aroma:** “Lots of yeast complexity and good citrus notes of lemon and orange. Prominent fruitiness with a ripe cherry phenolic character. Spices, pepper, oregano, rosemary, and some sulfur. Moderate malt shines through.” **Flavor:** “Moderate sweet malt is immediately overpowered by dominant bitterness. Lots of lemon zest, almost bitter pithy-ness. Playful fruit character that leans more toward phenols than esters. High carbonation and finishes dry, crisp, and slightly bitter with lingering astringency. Great body for a session beer.” **Overall:** “This is pretty darn full of body for a session beer. Really enjoyed this one. It’s easy drinking and refreshing. I’ve never smelled oregano like that in a beer. This would pair well with pizza and many other fatty foods.”
