You probably know that temperature control is a key way for brewers to ensure consistent, quality beer from one batch to the next. Professionals enjoy the benefit of glycol-cooled, jacketed cylindroconical fermentation tanks, but we homebrewers typically improvise a temperature-regulated fermentation chamber or even an ice bath. Just measure the temperature of the beer and let a controller turn on the cold as needed. Those who are just starting out in brewing will do just fine with an inexpensive (cheap) thermometer. There are several kinds of thermometer technology from which to choose:

  • Thermopen
  • Waterproof cable attached to a probe

Another key method to achieving quality, consistent batches is to establish a set process for your equipment cleaning. Forgetting to clean a part can lead to infection and off-flavors, and if you clean the same way every time, you’re less likely to have to toss your batch.
