Urban Artifact Beer in Cincinnati has earned a strong following for their fruit beers—intense in juicy flavors, yet always with a balancing acidity and drying finish. They call these beers “fruit tarts,” exemplified by brands such as The Gadget, a Midwest fruit tart—or by Teak, a tropical American fruit tart.

Teak won over our blind-review panel, who scored it 99/100 in our December-January 2023 issue. Our editors went on to name it one of the Best 20 Beers in 2022.

“Teak is an American fruit tart utilizing tropical fruits, a tart base beer, and fermenting everything to dryness,” says Bret Kollman Baker, cofounder and chief operating officer of Urban Artifact. “For most of our fruit tarts, the base beer is secondary to balancing the fruit-forward flavor and acidity.”
