What it is: In Toronto’s West End, this women-owned, community-driven, multipurpose space is the physical manifestation of the Society of Beer Drinking Ladies. Founded in 2014, the SOBDL is a community of women in a male-dominated industry who simply love beer. From its five cofounders, the SOBDL has grown to a membership of thousands having events and get-togethers, brewing collaboration beers and supporting women in the beer business. The Clubhouse opened in 2021 as a brick-and-mortar space for that community and anyone who enjoys beer.
Why it’s great: There are four beers on draft and dozens more in cans and bottles—and all are from women-owned breweries. These are available to drink at the Society Clubhouse or for takeaway via the in-house bottle shop. A small retail area sells Society merchandise along with artisanal goods made by local women. There’s also a 200-person space for hosting events such as book launches, weddings, healing circles, and everything in between. The overarching goal is to create a safe space for women to enjoy beer, but all are welcome.
