What the brewers say

“A refreshing golden ale, brewed with the finest malts and hops, giving a sweet, crisp citrus finish with just a hint of honey. Winner of the silver medal in the American-Style Cream Ale category at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Like a fruit orchard in spring. There’s moderate bready malt with very light bread crust. Slight grassy, citrus, and herbal hops. Very clean.”

Flavor: “Simple but balanced. It starts off with moderately low sweetness and blossoms into a low hops bitterness but with a dry finish that’s crisp and refreshing. There’s a lot to like from citrus and melon hops, toasted malt, apple and pear esters, somewhat mineraly bitterness, and a mildly cloying sweet finish. Moderate carbonation gives it a bit of bite.”

Overall: “This is your classic summer refresher. Simple but very drinkable. Balance of light bready malt and Old School grassy and herbal hops. We’ll say it again: well-balanced and well-crafted.”

Protagonist Beer Kal-El

“Classic Belgian saison aroma of hay, bread yeast, pepper, bubblegum, tiny bit of banana and vinegar. Earthy taste, with lemon, pears, and Noble hops. Substantial hop bitterness. Richer-than-expected mouthfeel.”

Sun King Brewing Sunlight Cream Ale

Candied peach and strawberry notes coupled with hints of pine and sugar cookies. Bready taste with light herbal hops; hints of strawberry, peach, lemon. A flash of sweet, a bit of corn, and the finish fades away. Heftier body than expected but finishes crisp and clean.

Boulevard Beer American Kolsch

Aroma: “Moderate bready malt with slight banana fruity esters at first followed by light floral and slightly citrus-hops aromas that are joined by watermelon and pear. A very light herbal hops aroma.” Flavor: “Light bready malt and a touch of banana esters continue onto the palate. There’s a moderately low sweetness that transitions into moderately low bitterness. The finish is dry, reminiscent of a fruit cocktail and very clean with a lingering bitterness.” Overall: “Clean and simple. Some unusual flavors that make it intriguing and unique.”
