Hardywood Baltic Sunrise

What the brewers say

“Hardywood Baltic Sunrise is conditioned on locally roasted coffee beans from Black Hand Coffee Company in Richmond, Virginia. Our Baltic porter is an invigorating, full-bodied lager with a bold aroma of freshly brewed coffee preceding notes of bittersweet chocolate, hints of dark cherry, and a malty smooth finish.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Major coffee, but not harsh or acidic. Some roasted malt and semisweet chocolate in the background. Coffee adds an almost smoky character. Grassy hops.”

Flavor: “Clean. Roast chocolate and coffee. Light green pepper. Mild supporting hops balance the malt and coffee. Nice coffee flavors, medium sweet.”

Overall: “Well-balanced with good malt complexity that is accentuated nicely by the coffee addition. This is the highway centerline of coffee porters: straight down the middle. Zone out and go.”

Pontoon Brewing Company Battle of the Baltics

“Smooth and restrained roast character in the aroma, with a clean ester profile. The flavor has a touch of rough dark chocolate with a slight pepper-flesh edge. Clean lager character throughout with supporting bitterness that doesn’t distract.”

Dust Bowl Brewing Public Enemy

Aroma: “Chocolate with a grassy hops character. A bit understated overall, but clean and appealing. Alcohol evident.” Flavor: “Rich and complex malt—coffee, toffee, figs, dried fruit. Finish has hints of grassy hops, a slight dark-malt tartness, with lingering toffee, chocolate, and a bit of alcoholic heat. Balance is slightly sweet, but not cloying, which accentuates the soft, creamy finish. Some nice chocolate notes in aftertaste.” Overall: “A fantastic beer—rich and complex, without harsh edges, and a lingering creamy finish that accentuates the dark-malt character throughout.”

Westbound & Down Brewing Company Acid Jazz Vol. 3

Barnyard funk jumps from the glass—notes of leather, hay, horse blanket, lemongrass, bready malt. Lemon emerges more in flavor—with tangerine and peach—with strong acidity that hits early and slowly fades, hindering drinkability. Leathery notes emerge in finish.
