What the brewers say

“Aged in the third-use barrels that were once home to Kentucky bourbon and then our renowned Bourbon County Stout. The oak, charcoal, hints of tobacco and vanilla, and that signature bourbon heat are all present in this beer.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Molasses aroma, like baking gingerbread cookies. Lots of aged complexities: sherry, port, and dried fruit. Light, peaty smoke lingers. Dark fruit (cherry, g, and prune) and slight peppery phenolic. Wood and whiskey are assertive but not overpowering.”

Flavor: “Thick body with waves of molasses and dark brown sugar. The barrel peeks through with resinous vanil- la; stewed plums and candied apricots join the party mid-palate. The lightest hint of smoke and teryaki add a lush complexity. Just enough hops bitterness. Sherry oxidation tones work very well.”

Overall: “A fantastic beer that I want to savor by the re like a late vintage port. The gooey, thick body provides a stage to let the various complexities sing. Very mellow and warming. If there is such a thing as a classic bourbon-barrel barleywine, this is it.”

Private Press Life is Round

“A quiet but complex malt-forward aroma with hints of toffee, caramel, chocolate, leather, hazelnut, and almond. Hints of caramel, vanilla extract, and toffee fight the ferocity of the heat.”

Goose Island Beer Company Bourbon County Brand Stout

**Aroma:** “Bourbon and vanilla up front with a nice supportive dark chocolate character. Pleasant oak aromas, light coffee, dark fruit, cherry fruit. Nice bourbon character but not too boozy. Some nutty, toffee, caramel notes. Sweet dark fruit quality.” **Flavor:** “Lots of vanilla and bourbon with a very pleasant chocolate character to support. Malt sweetness comes through as caramel and toffee. Subtle chicory roast and red wine vinegar. Burnt sugar and vanilla wood is so nice! Some nutty and coconut flavors, plus sweet dark fruit.” **Overall:** “Bourbon and oak on display, with lots of chocolate to support and balance the caramel malt. Finishes sweet and chewy. Great beer to sip on and showcases plenty of malt complexity and barrel character. Alcohol is obvious but not overbearing. With the barrel quality, malt, bourbon, and chocolate, it all builds to make a great beer.”

Phase Three Brewing Arabesque

“Rich dark chocolate, hazelnut, caramel, and coffee aroma. Flavor is equally bold as dark dried cherry and fig mingle with chocolate, caramel, roast, and leather.”
