Cloudburst Brewing Bleed American

What the brewers say

“All-malt contemporary American lager brewed with freedom, Oregon-grown Crystal hops, and more freedom.”

What our panel thought

“Quintessential light-lager aroma—sweet corn and generic hops, with slightly dialed-up intensity. Flavor is more neutral with a subdued cereal maltiness and a fleeting hint of floral, grassy hops. Crisp, clean finish with a light body. Hops add floral notes to the flavor, but balance is tilted toward malt sweetness.”

What our editors thought

“Neutral aroma, simple with just a touch of malt. Tight sip with big carb and not much else (in the best way).”

Glutenberg American Pale Ale

**Aroma:** “A bit of candy sweetness on the nose with a pleasant grapefruit and resiny hops aroma. Light floral hops notes, a bit soapy. Hops character is dominant in the nose. Grassy sweet notes. Some spiced and earthy character. A malt-like grainy sweetness with a hint of roast.” **Flavor:** “Citrusy American hops flavors, mostly grapefruit and pine, with a supporting candy-like sweetness. Finish is crisp, dry, and bitter but not out of balance. Carbonation and dryness accentuate the hops character. High carbonation and dry finish. Medium body with a lightly roasted grainiess that is almost malty. The hoppiness is reminiscent of an APA with a decent bitterness and a hint of citrus hoppiness. Some unusual esters, apples and pear.” **Overall:** “For hopheads venturing down the gluten-free route, this is one of the best options out there. This is a very tasty gluten-free version of an APA. Nice citrus hops character that is accentuated by the crisp, dry finish of the base beer. Bitter finishes the beer dry. Gluten-free character isn't offensive or astringent and doesn't come through as cider, allowing the nice hops character to come through. The hops profile is right where you'd expect, and it manages an almost malt-like profile.”

Civil Life American Brown Ale

Aroma: “Toasty malt with a hint of roast and chocolate and a touch of cherry and raspberry followed by piney and citrus hops. Nice toasted nut flavors. Bright chocolate, biscuit, and caramel malts followed by balanced hops and yeast esters.” Flavor: “Light malt sweetness followed by firm bitterness that sticks around well past the finish. A touch of rye or pumpernickel spice adds intriguing complexity. The hops come through more in the flavor with pine, grassy, slightly earthy, and grapefruit pith character.” Overall: “The lightly roasted interpretation of the style is endearing—it lacks the sharp edges typical of so many browns. This is what I want to drink on a crisp autumn afternoon—it’s so crushable and balanced, you could take down two of these while looking for pumpkins and still have enough of your wits about you to PR a corn maze.”

Three Weavers Brewing Expatriate

Aroma: “Clean. Fresh. Lemony and piney hops aroma. A little bit of malty sweetness.” Flavor: “Prominent hops presence. Kale, grapefruit, orange peel, dank, and pine flavors. Pleasantly malty as it warms up. A very enjoyable West Coast IPA with something extra to make it stand out. Bright and crisp with just enough body to support the hops.” Overall: “It’s clean and direct with a balance that tilts a bit more toward citrus and dank than straight bitterness. A well-executed West Coast IPA that feels modern and current by highlighting contemporary hops techniques.”
