Goose Island Beer Co. Four Star Pils

What the brewers say

“This golden-hued Pilsner has a light, fresh body and clean finish. Bright, refreshing carbonation mingles with German and American hops to give this Pilsner a unique Goose Island spin.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Super clean, somewhat flowery notes, combined with an herbal, slightly vegetal, hops aroma. Sweet malt, like a mash, and very low sulfur. Smells like the wort at the end of the boil.”

Flavor: “Well-balanced malt and hops character, with the sweet toasted cracker malt sweetness complementing the herbal and flowery tones of the hops. Clean finish and great balance.”

Overall: “Pretty solid, even with the flowery, earthy notes that are a little assertive. A good malt body that makes it unique and interesting. Very enjoyable!”

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Nooner Pilsner

**Aroma:** “Light fruity esters, with a touch of Pilsner malt, but very low aroma overall. Some sweet breadiness and light citrus, with a mild floral spice. Lemon and pepper, with some biscuit underneath that’s very delicate.” **Flavor:** “The front hits with some bready biscuit malt sweetness, as well as some cracker. Light, fruity citrus notes, with some pear, watermelon, and spice character. The hops are floral and spicy, which balances the malt sweetness. The bitterness is a bit bigger than the malt and hops flavors, but the beer is smooth, with a creamy mouthful.” **Overall:** “Dry and light, with a bitterness up front that’s not too overwhelming, followed by the sweetness of the malt in the middle, and a creamy sweetness. Clean and refreshing.”

Left Hand Brewing Company 1265 Pilsner

Aroma of resinous hop—lemony, slightly tropical and sweaty, but bright and alluring—with low underlying malt. Flavor is light—watery, earthy—but light sweetness helps to push a lemony-citrus hop tang. Moderately bitter, resinous; needs more malt depth to contain it. Very American take.

Red Brick Brewing Company Laughing Skull Craft Lager

**Aroma:** “Light bready sweetness that mixes with some slight floral notes and hints of pepper and lemon. A bit of acetaldehyde.” **Flavor:** “Light-bodied, crisp, with some bready sweetness and a slight citrus character. Very little hops flavor, with some pepper and bitterness up front, and a hint of floral that fades almost before you swallow it. Nice creaminess.” **Overall:** “Clean freshness with pepper and lemon, supported by a balanced biscuit malt. Invites the palate to take a second and third taste, and very welcoming. Lawnmower beer, and perfect for a hot day.”
