Adelbert's Brewery Hibiscus Saison

What the brewers say

“Brewed with hibiscus flowers and dry hopped with Citra, this ale blends a hint of tartness with tropical fruit and citrus notes. We recommend pairing it with fresh fruit salad, lemon tarts, or Hawaiian pulled pork.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Light berry and spicy aroma, and as it warms, a slight herbal note starts to come out. It has a surprisingly hoppy nose that is a little dank and resinous. Floral sweetness from the hibiscus along with some cherry esters and a light peppery backing.”

Flavor: “Light and delicate. Sweet and tart from the hibiscus notes. Medium body, light malt sweetness, a touch low on the carbonation for a saison, moderate acidity, light lemon, touch of hops floral notes and grassy, some light black pepper. Aftertaste is sweet with a slight acidity and a very light bitterness.”

Overall: “The delicate nature of the saison body and the sweet/tartness of the hibiscus are enjoyable. But the carbonation is quite a bit low, making the beer border on cloyingly sweet.”

Novel Brewing Co. Hibiscus Saison

__Aroma:__ “Hibiscus comes across as a mix of raspberry and cranberry. There’s some orange peel and a fair amount of herbal, faintly soapy, and grassy-like wet hay.” __Flavor:__ “The base beer brings some light malt body to play off of the esters from the hibiscus. Great fruity tartness up front, but some mild oxidation, and a slight smoky phenol.” __Overall:__ “Fruity, funky, and dry. Some might find the saison fermentation character is a bit over the top and that it detracts from the rest of the beer, but there are some great tart notes from the hibiscus.”

Fiction Beer Alternate Present

Aroma: “Moderate chocolate with roast and toasty malt. Rich Munich-type malt in there to support overall, and there’s a very light touch of slight smoke. A faint hops note loiters deep in the background.” Flavor: “More rich and toasty malts with hints of coffee, smoke, and bitter chocolate. Moderate sweetness morphs into a moderately low bitterness.” Overall: “A pleasant, roast-forward beer with hints of smoke but a slight sweetness that softens any possible rough edges. Nice malt character and malt complexity, but still very clean—that body doesn’t linger in the finish, and it closes in a crisp and refreshing way. A tasty beer overall.”

Tree House Beer Company Haze

**Aroma:** “Lots of juicy notes on this nose. Dank and resinous hops aroma. Mild malt and moderate esters. Huge orange aromas with lemon citrus complexities. Slight malt sweetness underneath.” **Flavor:** “Beautifully integrated flavors that range from lemon juicy notes to pineapple and mango. Very big hops flavor, expanding on that resinous spiciness in the nose to add some grapefruit notes. Rich but soft bitterness that lasts for days, like a dark-roast coffee. Big and chewy. Massive orange notes with some underlying complexity tasting of grapefruit and lemon. Finishes slightly bitter, begging another sip.” **Overall:** “Turbid and chewy body showcases the complex hops profile with excellent execution. The hops juiciness is paramount and carries through the beer. This beer tastes like breakfast (beer-mosa anyone?). Perfect for a weekend brunch.”
