Two Roads Brewing Co. Igor’s Dream

What the brewers say

“Made with rye and aged in oak whiskey barrels that give it a depth of character like no other.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “An interesting combination of roasted malt and subtle floral, juicy hops notes. Medium dark chocolate blends well with vanilla from the barrel and is delicately accentuated by bright fruity esters (cherry, pineapple, orange). Sweet but slightly bitter. Slight bourbon and some oak character.”

Flavor: “A surprisingly unique citrus and chocolate combination with a decent amount of roast added for good measure. Some nice barrel characteristics (vanilla), but they only enhance the wild show going on between whatever hops these brewers are using and the delicious chocolatiness they’ve developed.”

Overall: “One of the most unique barrel-aged stouts I’ve ever enjoyed. The curious use of juicy hops doesn’t distract but enhances the rich stout and barrel flavors already present. Well crafted! Really enjoyed the orange/pineapple esters which are not typical of the style.”

“Aroma is a lovely blend of rye and whiskey. The flavor is carried by chocolate, coffee, toast with low cherry, fig esters. Hops are higher in this one, with an odd dill/herbal note.”

Hardywood Park Cassowary

**Aroma:** “Fantastic milky-sweet aroma that reminds me of a coffee hot chocolate, with evident earthy roast character in the back. Lots fruity esters ranging from plum, raisin, and even a touch of banana. The sweet aroma dominates, with no perceived alcohol or hops presence.” **Flavor:** “A wonderful chocolate milk flavor dominates and coats the mouth up front. The roast comes in secondary but quickly turns to this complex stone fruit flavor of prunes with a date-like sweetness. The sweetness and fruity esters linger into the finish with an ever-so-slight roast character that provides a great balance. The body is really nice on this beer and carbonation carries the beer well. It’s a fantastic creamy imperial.” **Overall:** “This is a complex beer, with roast character that’s balanced with an evident sweetness and fruity esters that are in perfect harmony. The body carries really well. It’s a unique and intense beer that brings some different flavors to the imperial stout party.”

__Aroma:__ “Bright tropical flavors, mango, papaya, pineapple, and passion fruit. Light malt sweetness that just enhances the intense fruitiness. Interesting notes of pine and onion mixed with light floral notes. Very intriguing.” __Flavor:__ “The intense fruitiness from the aroma continues into the flavor. If the color weren’t golden straw, I might be convinced I was drinking Hawaiian Punch. Just a slight amount of bitterness on the back end provides a nod to the base style ‘IPA,’ but the hops flavor is the star. For as fresh as the hops flavors are, there is little hops bite or yeasty burn common in rushed versions of this style.” __Overall:__ A beautifully intense juicy hops-forward beer that captures the style expertly without falling prey to some of the pitfalls of the style. Very drinkable.”
