Mikerphone Brewing Amburana

What the brewers say

“Base imperial stout aged in a Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel and conditioned on Amburana spirals.”

What our panel thought

“Cold brew roasted coffee overwhelms any other subtle aromatics. The initial sip is a nice blend of intensely bitter roasted coffee and chocolate sweetness with the bitterness of the coffee slowly fading and allowing some caramel, vanilla, and custard-like notes to emerge as things fade into the finish. The alcoholic heat is not hiding but lends a smooth runway for the beer to land upon and remain drinkable even with the ABV.”

What our editors thought

“Distinct coffee note on the nose, defined and singular. Sweet and spicy in the sip, as cocoa and caramel sweetness intertwine with a nutty coffee thread. Big and rich, but tightly balanced.”

Westbound & Down Brewing Company P23

“Roasted malt aroma with rich notes of tobacco, leather, herbal liqueur. Velvety malt profile of burnt bread, honey, coconut, spice, vanilla. Colheita madeira, cedar shavings, sage come to mind.”

Crooked Stave Private Reserve Bourbon Barrel Imperial Oatmeal Stout #183

Sweet up front as deep molasses and chocolate wrap around a bourbon-filled body. Dries out fairly well at the end. It’s like being thrown into a blender full of dark chocolate, bourbon barrels, vanilla, and cinnamon.

Living Waters Brewing Company Euphrates

Bold aromatics of milk chocolate, caramel, and coffee in the nose are complimented by a healthy suggestion of a boozy melange of spirits. Dark chocolate coffee bean in combination with boozy raisiny oak. The sip hits first with a nice sweet chocolate note that fades into a lightly bitter roasted coffee flavor like a nice mocha. As that bittersweet flavor fades, the oaky booze notes emerge, with hints of vanilla, rum, and whiskey, and that boozy heat lingers into the finish. Very low carbonation, remains warm without being hot.
