What the brewers say

“We blended Black Tuesday and our Anniversary ale into our barleywine-style ale base.”

What our panel thought

“The aroma suggests butterscotch raisins with wood and caramel. The flavor adds fig, oak, and tart fruit. The aftertaste suggests syrah wine and spicy herbal hops.”

What our editors thought

“Shoe leather stiffness softened by coconut in the aroma. The clever sip seduces with instant sweetness that quickly retreats into burnt bread-crust bitterness, lingering with a dark cacao note.”

Cellarmaker Brewing Company Edge of Time

“Big toffee and caramel aroma with nutty notes—almond and hazelnut—but no hop aroma or flavor. That sweet nuttiness carries through into the flavor, accentuated by moderate boozy warmth and noticeable oak. Sultanas add a big fruity note and linger into a long caramel finish.”

American Solera Stuffed Crust

“Strong bourbon aroma ends in rich sweet chocolate, toffee, and caramel notes. Finishes sweet with pale chocolate, candied raisins, and subtle bourbon barrel. Very low carbonation with just a hint of oak astringency.”

Offshoot Beer (The Bruery) Unwind (You Earned This Hoppy Pils)

Fresh, piney grapefruit nose, with a little honey-malt underneath. In the flavor, a burst of crystal malt sweetness with good grapefruit-citrus hops. Well balanced sweetness and hop-bitterness. Crisp, clean brightness showcases the hops. Doesn't try too hard. Smoothed out; no raw IPA edges.
