Ska Brewing Pink Vapor Stew

What the brewers say

“Citra and Belma hops combine with beets, carrots, ginger, and apples.”

What our panel thought

“A somewhat curious, unique, and intriguing beer. The earthy, beet-forward aromas become more overt as it warms, yet the lactic tartness complements the natural bitterness. It’s well executed and unique. Absolutely beautiful color as well.”

What our editors thought

“An outrageously magenta color sets up wild expectations. The flavor is equal parts earthy, sweet, and acidic, with a balanced sourness that highlights the fruitier elements without seeming cliché. A subtle spice underpins it, offering structure but no bitterness.”

Deep Ellum Rye Pils

**Aroma:** “Pepper-like rye spice hits up front, with a bit of cinnamon and a medium, woody hops aroma. Some fruity, Kölsch-like esters, with a little citrus, apple, pear, and banana. Some biscuit toast in the back.” **Flavor:** “The prominent malt body has some nice biscuit sweetness. A little pepper character adds complexity, but it’s not too bitter. Detectable yeast esters of ripe pear and apple balance the bitterness of the hops. Finishes clean, smooth, and crisp with great carbonation.” **Overall:** “I loved the carbonation in this beer. The rye seemed to fit and work with the malt. Lots of flavor that’s complex and interesting, although perhaps too full for a Pilsner. This beer is about the rye, and the hops do not get in the way.”

Alvarado Street Brewery Hot Pink Sherburps

“A refined, tropical-fruit-punch character—the dragon fruit/grapefruit combo works especially well, and the guava adds an earthiness without coming across like dirty socks. The classic beer-flavor element is minimal. Thoroughly enjoyable—tropical without the generic Kool-Aid quality. Dragon fruit lends it a beautiful pink color. Big tropical-fruit aroma transitions into big tropical-fruit flavor, while the moderate sweetness throughout is balanced by a moderate acidity. Finishes with tart fruit character. Big flavors, but it works and finds an overall balance. Fun beer!”

Ska Brewing Company Modus Hoperandi

**Aroma:** “Danky hop aroma dominates. Citrus hops up front with pine coming through behind the grapefruit and finally giving way to a subtle malt sweetness. A very subtle, but pleasant malt note and additional tropical fruit flavors as it warms. Nice complexity.” **Flavor:** “Bright, almost sharp hop flavors with prominent citrus rind, resin, pine. Some subtle yeast fruitiness and pleasant malt sweetness that also has some subtle biscuit character. Bitterness is prominent, but well balanced with malt. Big hop flavor.” **Overall:** “A very tasty IPA with intense hop flavors that are well-served with a nice malt backbone. A nice display of juicy American hops, just a bit too bitter for some tastes. Classic example of an IPA.”
