Pinthouse Brewing Twisted Nuance American Pils

What the brewers say

“A subtly complex weave of honey pear, floral notes, and a touch of sweet malt with a balanced bitterness.”

What our panel thought

“Perfume and floral hop notes are supported by some subtle hints of pine, lemongrass, and grapefruit in the nose. The sip starts light and clean, but slowly the bitterness builds. As it builds, notes of pine, grapefruit, lemon, green tea, and cedar emerge, creating a wildly complex yet balanced bitterness that lingers nicely into the clean, crisp finish.”

What our editors thought

“Light American hop aroma with a strong herbal punch softened by brighter citrus edges and a bready malt underneath. The body leans a bit Czech in its fullness, but that’s what it needs to support the significant hop character. The hops are worked and refined, smoothed despite their strong flavors, for a beautifully expressive but eminently drinkable American take on pils.”

Twin Barns Brewing Company Belknap Pils

“Spicy herbal hops and a hint of piecrust malt come together for an inviting aroma. Clean, floral, and perfume-like aromatics are balanced by a hint of malt and create a pleasant and inviting nose. Cracker and lightly grainy malt notes serve as a perfect canvas to both balance and showcase the floral and soapy hop bitterness. That bitterness, while distinct and present, is sufficiently restrained allowing for a near-perfect balance. The flavor develops the hops character nicely, adding a little more detail with some light floral notes. There’s enough clean malt to balance the crisp bitterness, without cloying or softening the finish. Hops flavor and bitterness last into the dry and taut finish—clean and refreshing with just a hint of lingering bitterness.”

Great Notion Brewing Ledge Bier

“Classic Noble hops–derived aroma; floral, spicy, perfume-like. Crisp body with layers of bread dough, light cracker, soft lemon soap. Finishes on malty side, bitterness left as an afterthought. Pleasantly simple; lacks that hop punch you might expect. Underwhelming.”

Pinthouse Pizza Round Rock Radical Pils

“Subtle aroma of malt and grassy American hops. Complex from the outset. Bready malt, rich esters, and woody hop notes blend seamlessly. More hop flavor than bitterness, but well balanced, though tilted toward the malt side. Nuanced malt profile with hint of honey, hay, cereal with graceful floral hop notes. Rich without being cloying. Not a light beer, but certainly not sweet. Well-balanced hop bitterness and a crisp, clean finish.”
