Heavy Seas Schnee Boot

What the brewers say

“The strongest beer that we’ve ever created, Schnee Boot is dark, malty, and roasty with hints of cocoa, vanilla, and dark fruits. This beast of a lager gets additional complexity from bourbon-barrel aging.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Rum up front followed quickly by bourbon-barrel oak, toffee, bready malt, bourbon-filled chocolate, spicy alcohol, stewed plums, vanilla, butterscotch, toffee, fig, raisin, and prune.”

Flavor: “A pronounced sweetness that slowly fades and is balanced by fairly strong alcohol. Bourbon-barrel oak, toffee, bready malt, stewed plums, big dose of hot alcohol, very drying. Alcohol spiciness is probably enhanced with noble hops. Finishes like a boozy Belgian dark strong or a candy bar.”

Overall: “Wonderfully complex and satisfyingly drinkable. The oak-derived flavors and aromas definitely enhance rather than detract from the base beer. An excellent beer to cozy up to next to a fire!”

Port City Brewing Schwarzbier

Nice caramel welcome, with a twist of mint from floral, spicy Noble hops; low coffee, cocoa. Subdued, balanced roast melds with hop bitterness. Finishes dry and quickly, begging for another taste.

Firestone Walker Brewing Co Lager

Lovely, brilliant gold. Balanced aroma of light, spicy hops and soft, bready malt. Herbal-spicy bitterness—a bit sharp—balancing bright, bready sweetness. Faint pom fruit. Light body, lively mouthfeel. A bit astringent, leaning bitter. Clean, dry finish. Refreshing, drinkable.

Weyerbacher Brewing Co. Blasphemy

**Aroma:** “Some nice vanilla, bourbon, and oak on the front, with a hint of coconut and almond, followed by caramel and toffee notes from the malt. Sweet cherry, plum, fig, subtle raisin and date. Slight pepper phenolics. Touch of banana.” **Flavor:** “Rich caramel and toffee malt sweetness complement the vanilla, bourbon, oak, brown sugar, and coconut of the barrel nicely. Nice dark fruit character with cherry, plum, raisin, fig, some red apple, and maybe a touch of strawberry. Medium alcohol that is warming but not hot...yet.” **Overall:** “An excellent barrel-aged quad, where the barrel complements a very well-brewed base beer. Vanilla, coconut, and almond from the barrel combine with the malt notes of toffee and caramel to create a candy-like experience. Strong alcohol note that is surprisingly not hot. Extremely well balanced.”
