What the brewers say

Well balanced stout with notes of dark chocolate, hints of coffee and toasted malt.

What our panel thought

"Moderate chocolate and light coffee malt aroma. No hop. A bit of light fig. Brown (not black) w/ ruby highlights, nearly absent head and retention. Strong malt flavor, lots of chocolate and toast. Lower coffee. Sweeter than expected with an FG more in a sweet stout range. Quite a smooth roast flavor overall and very pleasant and enjoyable to drink. Mouthfeel nice and full. Carbonation low (needs to be creamy in mouthfeel). Quite lovely, but really misses the mark on an oatmeal stout. Sweetness seems like a robust/American porter, but I don't really think the alcohol is there. Style doesn't really need to mean anything if this beer is selling well (and I expect it does)." "Black pour with ruby highlights and a thin tan head. Sweet chocolate nose with a touch of ash. Round body with a thinner underlying malt structure. Chocolate, dark roasted coffee and dark fruit flavors with an elevated roast character. Sweeter finish with more coffee notes and a lingering roast quality. Leans more porter than oatmeal stout."

What our editors thought

"Chocolate with a slightly burnt note in the aroma. A bit round in the sip, sweeter than expected, without enough bitter chocolate definition to push back against the sweetness in the body. It's sweet and likable, but at the expense of pints 2, 3, and 4."

Twin Barns Brewing Company McGuigan's Stout

“Very light aromas of roast malt, coffee, piney and earthy hops, and a touch of mint. The roast, dark chocolate, coffee malt flavors are quite delicate. The bitterness is just as soft and the body is light, creating a very clean and simple yet unassuming package.”

Denizens Brewing Company Cool Breeze

“Pleasant aroma of chocolate malt, with light pear esters. Mineral notes imply dryness. Flavor is roasted malt with chocolate overlay. Malt body with hints of toast and dark candy sugar. Creamy on the tongue; smooth, bitter finish.”

Soul Fire Brewing Co Frances

Nice roast malt aromatics of coffee, toffee, caramel, toast, and bread crust balance well with some subtle but pleasant floral hop notes. The sip leans quite hard into the roast and toes the line of becoming heavy handed. The caramel, toffee, and coffee notes are well balanced and enjoyable, but they seem to come across a bit more reminiscent of a dunkel or a brown ale. The finish is clean, lightly bitter and crisp. A clean, easy drinking, and enjoyable roast forward lager that doesn't care what style you call it. It will be consumed rapidly nonetheless. Bright copper color with sticky off white foam. Some lightly roasted malt aromas followed by coffee and bread crust. Really nice grassy malt flavors throughout. The bitterness matches the sweetness really well allowing for structure and drinkability. Finishes quick and clean. This beer may be a bit roasty for Vienna Lager but drinks like a great brown ale.
