Stodgy Brewing Company Griffin's Port Barrel Aged Imperial Stout

What the brewers say

“Aged in a whiskey-finished port barrel.”

What our panel thought

“Decadent aroma of brownies, ruby port, figs, and brandy. Luscious taste profile with layers of burnt sugar, maraschino cherries, vanilla, dried dates, and a touch of cinnamon. Alcohol is big and bold, but not hot or harsh. Full-bodied and sweet, but not quite cloying.”

What our editors thought

“Lighter woody and nutty note in the aroma with just a hint of dark fruit. Vinous in the flavor, lighter body with a shortbread-cookie sweetness and swirling chocolate tones.”

Westbound & Down Brewing Company Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout (2021)

“Muscled-up olafactory pounding of bourbon, plum, vanilla, chocolate cake, smooth barrel char. Flavors of fudge, red dessert wine, and burnt caramel keep me coming back. Base stout debauched in complex layers that marry so well with the barrel. Big, thick, boozy—in a great way. Fantastic beer.”

Broad Brook Brewing Company Rooster Inhaler Barrel Aged Imperial Stout

“Hints of roasting coffee and crispy marshmallow on a delicate nose. Flavor is well rounded and compact. Dried blueberries, rich chocolate syrup, chicory. Malt, sweet spirits, alcohol nicely balanced. Tannins, vanilla add complexity.”

Kros Strain Brewing Company Barrelywine Vol. 9 - Port Barrel aged

“Dark stone fruit, cherry-like, intermingles with dark roast consisting of coffee and chocolate. Starts sweet and ends sweet, but not overly cloying. Intense chocolates, a touch of toffee, all with an underlying and consistently smooth alcohol component. Complex, silky smooth, and interesting.”
